Bakersfield
My original aim in this blogging venture was to run a quasi-journalistic venture in the vein of Berkeleyside, but set in my hometown and current residence, Bakersfield. Berkeleyside is a fantastic news site run by a handful of professional journalists whose passion for the strange and beautiful city of Berkeley provided my main competition as an editor on the city desk at The Daily Californian.
Of course, the key here is “passion”, which I realized a few weeks after my return to the Central Valley, is sorely lacking. And not being one to tie myself down unnecessarily (at least, not to anything but women and inebriants), I decided to redirect my efforts into this, seventhirtytwo.
But in fitting tribute to my ill-fated idea, my first article will tackle this doomed but charming specter of a town, in hopes that I may briefly dispel some of the more enduring myths, and perhaps conjure a few new ones.
